Embracing the world with positive creativity since Sept 2007.
Human Liberty Around the World is a Club Symposium that identifies, logs, and encourages the discussion of key principles and documents that promote freedom in the modern world. It is established at this time, in September 2012, because so many in the worldwide Global Village have struggled in recent years to compose an active vocabulary to help reshape their lives. That vocabulary-under-construction more often than not tends to include the word “freedom” or “liberty.”
Some of the declarations included in this resource, such as the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights, are well known. Others are not. Each exemplifies a basic characteristic of what it means to be human. Various additions will be made as they become available and we welcome suggestions regarding the same.
For many creative artists this has often meant simply “freedom of expression,” but for many other creative artists it has also meant utilizing artistic gifts to enhance awareness of such struggles or even to help attain their stated goals. This is not a political forum advocating one power agenda over another––although the phrase “all is political” is a well-known one. This is about helping provide the tools of communication necessary to facilitate the recognition of human urgencies minus the destruction of human beings.
The impulse to live life with as much freedom as possible is, arguably, perhaps as basic to human existence as breathing itself. Virtually every war throughout history, whether civil or international, has been fought over conflicts between assertions of imposed authority and affirmations of individuals or sometimes collective rights. Confirming a civilized balance between the two has cost an immeasurable fortune in time, actual gold, and human life. As naïve as it may sound, this symposium is dedicated to taking the loss of life out of the current historical equation and celebrating some of the more unique gifts of human being-ness itself: the abilities to exercise compassion, resist tyrannies of fear, and empower ourselves with ennobling conscience.

United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)
PREAMBLE
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,
Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,
Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,
Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

It really is so much more than just a matter of ideology, isn't it? Those such as Ko Un have lived in the flesh so many different interpretations and dramatized attempts at resolution of what is presented here.

Louis Armstrong's What a World is a brilliant choice. As always, I am
deeply impressed by CTI's dedication and creativity.
Just back from a trip. Hope to contribute to the discussion later in the week.
