Haying Time in Chattooga County

Haying Time in Chattooga County

Round bales, taller than a man,
seem to appear overnight
like an invasion of mythical animals
seeking some secret destination.
They gather in meadows and fields,
scatter across the rolling hills,
a vast herd passing through
on a mysterious migration.
The afternoon sun glints
off their green-gold pelts
as they graze across the grass
that has become themselves.
Docile creatures intent on their journey,
they ignore the flapping of crows
and the clamor of wild turkey… Continue

No Debts

NO DEBTS

Unable to accept the dead-end web
that tangled through her body,
or the sun that flickered
a solemn warning of its end,
she stretched forth her hand,
humble as the woman
who touched Jesus’ garment,
to touch the TV
as the evangelist instructed.
But no savior’s power
pulsed through her fingers
to cleanse and heal
with his holy love.
Almost a year since that pale sun
fell to dust,
yet his holy bills keep coming,
addressed to a name now carved in stone.
God, is this priest one of yours?

The Cleaning Lady At The Budget Inn

The Cleaning Lady At The Budget Inn

There is something mysterious
about the cleaning lady
here at the Budget Inn in Statesboro.
I have watched her all week
as I sip my coffee beside the small pool
while my wife attends classes.
She flits all morning from door to door
speaking to everyone she meets.
Without fail she stops to speak
to the pigeons that line the low motel roof.
Tilting forward they listen intently,
then fly round the flag at the post office
sending away her message with feathered s… Continue

THE TWIN

The Twin

My wife and I had cleared away
the fallen branches and encroaching saplings,
had propped up the tumbled tombstones.
We'd discovered Margaret, Mary,
and Sarah, their mother,
all buried within weeks of each other;
the Confederate soldier on eternal picket duty
just outside the cemetery's boundary;
and the three long graves hidden beneath leaves,
marked by common rocks at head and feet.
We thought we'd uncovered
all of the overgrown graves,
until the old man rattled up
our rutted drive in… Continue

Hawk

HAWK

Perched on a telephone line
the feathered king surveys his kingdom.
Invitations, regrets, congratulations,
busy syllables tumble
through the grasp of his claws.
Everyday gossip, frantic reminders,
happy birthdays, angry words,
it’s all the same to him.
The hunter’s wings unfold
as businesses spit out urgent messages
and lovers whisper their private words.
His shadow scythes across the meadow;
animals dodge and shriek.
He glides a current of silence
back to the taut humming of his throne.… Continue

Heya there, hightower; dropping by to say a quick hi. Hope you can manage to get back here soon! Did you see that I got first place prize for the celebs here? COOLNESS!! I will be looking at your page again, see if anything has been added, read some stuff over again.

Have a good one!

Robby baby<-I changed my handle here to that. It's a pet nickname a girlfriend gave me that I love, and that I've kept ever since. Cute, huh? :)

David,
Thank you for appreciating my poem. I think all poets share the ability to weep and laugh at the world, to be almost speechless at the violence, but also to contemplate the stillness and later make it speak in his words. Like Li Po and Tu Fu being separated by miles and unsure whether they would see each other again, but also "drinking alone with the moon," dancing with one's shadow, and toasting each other even in separation, or Wang Wei always alone with "just echoes of the voice of men." My father's war (in the Pacific) was a generation back but violence continues to be done to our generation, with our without bombs. Poets like you (and me) must speak because we, to paraphrase Auden, are always driven by the world into poetry.

Ah, I know your impatience with dial-up, it was only recently broadband became more available here in my own country. But your blog is richer--I must come back to read some more.

Cheers!

David,
Thanks so much for the congrats on "Spotlight Artist" You know Mr. A, He goes his own way: I would have decline had he asked (at least to wait until my CD is for sale & Out there) Hey, I'm going to message you on "connection problems" I completely understand. I have dial-up modem too and I also live in a remote area (the middle of the Ocala National Forest in Florida) so I have various connect problems which lately I think is due to my line outside. I'll write you on this, you may be able to call the phone co. and get it looked at.
I love your concise pithy style of poetry. Someday, when I'm truely retired I hope to visit the Ga. mountains for Fly Fishing for Trout.
Is your latest stuff to be in a new book that might journalize your retirement in Summerhill (was it?) I'd love to puruse it. Like your latest poems much.

best luck with the computer, michael guy

Congratulations on your poet of the year award! You sure have a well defined original style - and consistently delivers. "Soldier on the Wall" is excellent. Your poetry is aged like Fine Wine but your look kinda young for a Retired Guy! How'd you do it?

Hi David,

Happy New Year! Congratulations on being selected Poet of the Year 2007 at The Writing Forum. The Hanging Man Dreams is a powerful mind-adjuster. Perhaps revelations of the immortality of Dreamers. This is literary material like the stuff out of the Popol Vuh, the ancient Maya Book of Counsel. The Hanging Man Dreams synopsis appears to fill in gaps in the continuum of the human experience. All good things to us in the New Year 2008...

Warmly,
Sage

I enjoyed reading your incredibly well crafted poems today and will certainly check out "Hanging Man..." at AD sometime. You are another Southern American poet of substance and must have spent years creating such a style and voice. And if you like Jazz, blues please see some of my orignal instrumental music on my Music Player here at CTI -- nice to meet you....
