Work and Soul in Michael Jackson's This Is it: The Human Nature of the Dance

It says a lot that even while its principle star struggled to conserve creative energy and was simply “warming up” for the actual live performance scheduled to follow, Michael Jackson’s This Is It snagged the October 30 weekend box office in the United States with $21,300,000. It says even more that just two weeks after its opening, as of November 12, 2009,… Continue

While investigations surrounding the death of Michael Jackson steadily progressed and media frenzy over different facets of his life continued, the great entertainer and philanthropist himself was laid to rest September 3, 2009, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

Jackson’s funeral came just over two months, and two… Continue

Princes and Poets of the Realm

The late Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy's memoir True Compass.

When word came of the death of Senator Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy (1932-2009) last week, I did as I so often do when hearing about the passing of someone whose life had a major influence on my own––I reached for my pen to write a poem or short essay in tribute to the great soul. I had already written several for Michael Jackson––including the… Continue

Michael Jackson: Legacies of a Globetrotting Moonwalking Philanthropist (Part 1)

Michael Jackson in dancer mode for the "This Is It" tour.

As what would have been the beloved iconic entertainer’s 51st birthday approaches (August 29, 2009) the world community once again finds itself engaged in rediscovering, redefining, and re-devouring Michael Jackson. Some are feasting as they have been for years on continuous disclosures about aspects of his life (and now death) considered unconventional and… Continue

and we wanted to go higher

The Quotable Michael Jackson

Singer Michael Jackson August 29, 1959-June 25, 2009

When a friend expressed her sadness over the recent death of Michael Jackson, she was surprised to hear me say I never paid much attention to his music or videos. I like different kinds of music but in the past few years noticed that I particularly appreciate classical music and modern New Age music with strong classical influence. Then my friend said Jackson was… Continue

by Joyce White

Artists spend so much time creating their art, they forget to work on their personal lives. I, myself, try to live my life in between drafts.

Michael Jackson lived with a child's heart. Listen to his… Continue

Maybe We Still Are the World

So many reasons this classic "We are the World" video is one of the most amazing things musicians have ever done. With words and music by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, the video features some of the greatest talents in the history of American music. I couldn't count or catch them all but this list is the one's I could:

Ray Charles

Bob Dylan

Michael Jackson

Al Jarreau

Quincy Jones

Cydney Lauper

To Walk a Lifetime in Michael Jackson's Moccasins

Michael Jackson in concert around 1995. (photographer unknown)

You probably can’t read the words in the note next to the accompanying photo of Michael Jackson, but they were handwritten by the singer himself during the mid 1990s when he was constantly on tour and just as constantly a subject of much public ridicule and condemnation. This note was composed on hotel stationery and, complete with original spellings,… Continue
