Time (once again) to be the Sun

The words on the image are actually excerpts from the longer poem below. They were the ones that seemed to call out and beg to be attached to this photo of me modeling for a mask created by my friend Michele and later used as part of a sculpture.…

Work and Soul in Michael Jackson's This Is it: The Human Nature of the Dance

Michael Jackson with dancers in This is It. (AP photo release)

It says a lot that even while its principle star struggled to conserve creative energy and was simply “warming up” for the actual live performance scheduled to follow, Michael Jackson’s This Is It snagged the October 30 weekend box office in the United States with $21,300,000. It says even more that just two weeks after its opening, as of November 12, 2009,… Continue

Three Great Movies to Tag for Holiday Viewing

Actor Jim Carrey in front of A Christmas Carol poster.

What movies are you watching for the holidays? Most people are more likely to think along the lines of movie classics like It’s a Wonderful World (1947) or the more modern The Preacher’s Wife (1996) and megastar Jim Carrey’s forthcoming Walt Disney blockbuster, A Christmas Carol when it comes to considering films to enjoy with one’s family… Continue

The Unique Genius of Gullah Artist Allen Fireall

Artist Allen Fireall at Friedman's Fine Art. (photo by Sandra Mudge from the Georgia Guardian)

When considering that an artist for the past twenty years has been producing and selling more than 100 original paintings per year, it becomes difficult to think of the individual as one of the South’s best kept brilliant secrets. Yet, despite the fact that he was selected one of the “top five collectible artists in the… Continue

Princes and Poets of the Realm

The late Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy's memoir True Compass.

When word came of the death of Senator Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy (1932-2009) last week, I did as I so often do when hearing about the passing of someone whose life had a major influence on my own––I reached for my pen to write a poem or short essay in tribute to the great soul. I had already written several for Michael Jackson––including the… Continue

Twitter Twitter Tweet Tweet

I was very much relieved recently when both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and actor Johnny Depp admitted to hearing something go “Twitter-Twitter Tweet-Tweet,” like some Vulcan canary singing for its supper out in the depths of cyberspace, but didn’t have the faintest idea what it might be. Their public admission, I felt, placed me in very good company indeed.

“Twitter-Twitter Tweet-Tweet.” Say what?!

Belonging… Continue

The Quotable Michael Jackson

Singer Michael Jackson August 29, 1959-June 25, 2009

When a friend expressed her sadness over the recent death of Michael Jackson, she was surprised to hear me say I never paid much attention to his music or videos. I like different kinds of music but in the past few years noticed that I particularly appreciate classical music and modern New Age music with strong classical influence. Then my friend said Jackson was… Continue

The Road to Selma's Hell and Back (Part 1)

(Barack Obama, John Lewis, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Clinton crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 2006)

An odd point of irony from this particular writer’s life: I have boarded planes that touched down in places hundreds and thousands of miles from my home state of Georgia (USA), traveling to California, England, Germany, Scotland, and elsewhere. But somehow I never journeyed west, just next door, to the state of Alabama until… Continue
