Thus Spoke the Passion of the Poets (Repost for World Poetry Day 2012)

Scholars, lovers, and the lonely-hearted all know poetry in their own way and all have their own very lovely relationships with it. But who have a more passionate relationship with poetry than poets themselves? These quotes are presented in honor of their voices and their inspiring dedication to "the flower of language."

“If there were no poetry on any day in the world, poetry would be invented that day.  For there would be…

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot (video with text)

LET us go then, you and I,

When the evening is spread out against the sky

Like a patient etherised upon a table;

Let us go,…

Poet Elizabeth Alexander Recites Inauguration Poem

Inauguration Day 2009 Poet Elizabeth Alexander recites Praise Song for the Day. Scholars, poets, and poetry lovers are still making up their minds concerning how they feel about the poem but most seem to think it was appropriate for the occasion. Alexander’s publisher, Grey Wolf Press, is showing its approval and pride by publishing a commemorative chap book of the poem, similar to what Maya Angelou’s publisher did with her inaugural poem, On…

"Conversation" by Ai

We smile at each other

and I lean back against the wicker couch.

How does it feel to be dead? I say.

You touch my knees with your blue fingers.

And when you open your mouth,

a ball of yellow light falls to the floor

and burns a hole through it.

Don't tell me, I say. I don't want to hear.

Did you ever, you start,

wear a certain kind of dress

and just by accident,

so inconsequential you… Continue

"From Blossoms" by Li Young Lee

From blossoms comes

this brown paper bag of peaches

from sweet fellowship in the bins,

comes nectar at the roadside, succulent

peaches we devour, dusty skin and all,

comes the familiar dust of summer, dust we eat.

O, to take what we love inside,

to… Continue
