"Conversation" by Ai

We smile at each other

and I lean back against the wicker couch.

How does it feel to be dead? I say.

You touch my knees with your blue fingers.

And when you open your mouth,

a ball of yellow light falls to the floor

and burns a hole through it.

Don't tell me, I say. I don't want to hear.

Did you ever, you start,

wear a certain kind of dress

and just by accident,

so inconsequential you… Continue

"From Blossoms" by Li Young Lee

From blossoms comes

this brown paper bag of peaches

we bought from the joy

at the bend in the road where we turned toward

signs painted Peaches.

From laden boughs, from hands,

from sweet fellowship in the bins,

comes nectar at the roadside, succulent

peaches we devour, dusty skin and all,

comes the familiar dust of summer, dust we eat.

O, to take what we love inside,

to… Continue

"Jazz Fan Looks Back" by Jayne Cortez

Poet Jayne Cortez

I crisscrossed with Monk

Wailed with Bud

Counted every star with Stitt

Sang "Don't Blame Me" with Sarah

Wore a flower like Billie

Screamed in the range of Dinah

& scatted "How High the Moon" with Ella Fitzgerald

as she blew roof off the Shrine Auditorium

Jazz at the Philharmonic

"City That Does Not Sleep" by Federico Garcia Lorca

In the sky there is nobody asleep. Nobody, nobody.

Nobody is asleep.

The creatures of the moon sniff and prowl about their cabins.

The living iguanas will come and bite the men who do not dream,

and the man who rushes out with his spirit broken will meet on the street corner

the unbelievable alligator quiet beneath the tender protest of the

stars.

Nobody is asleep on earth. Nobody,… Continue

April 17 Poem in Your Pocket Day

Borrowing an excerpt from A's earlier post:

”On April 17, Americans will mark the first national Poem In Your Pocket Day by carrying poems and sharing them with co-workers, family, friends, and even strangers. Celebrating the power of the poem to both transport a reader and be transported by one, the day will include events at bookstores, libraries, schools, parks, and workplaces throughout the country.”

"That Blue Seclusion" by Erroll Miller

(artwork La Civilizacion Tarasa by Diego Rivera)

That blue seclusion

between here & there, like

lately I am only semi-shy, slightly Beat,

slightly bent, not rose-cheeked, a little chaos,

my life, face, arms, legs, plus a few

pictures from Bill's Dollar Store.

Horace the Hired Hand,

his ass has shrunk tremendously, hair gone, damn

this, damn that, here, in this poem, needing a… Continue
