In the Words of Oscar Emmanuel Peterson

There were no nays, debates, or abstentions when it came to declaring Oscar Emmanuel Peterson as one of the greatest jazz piano masters of all time. Born August 15, 1925, he grew up in the neighborhood of Little Burgundy in Montreal, Canada, and passed December 23, 2007. These are a few quotes to help remember the artist and the music that influenced so many playing piano today:
“The music field was the first to break down racial barriers, because in order to play
together, you have to love the people you are playing with, and if you have any racial inhibitions, you wouldn't be able to do that.”
“Some people try to get very philosophical and cerebral about what they're trying to
say with jazz. You don't need any prologues, you just play.”
“I believe in using the entire piano as a single instrument capable of expressing every
possible musical idea.”
“You not only have to know your own instrument, you must know the others and how to back

He was so great, I couldn't hold a candle to him. As Duke said, a true virtuoso. I have a little book of preludes and excercises he wrote that I played alot in the 1980s when practising. They were simple but deceptively hard to master. For 2008, I will get them out (I could use the discipline!) And his music and songs, were so perfect that it was like trying to learn a classical master when you would get a transcription of them. Too hard, I never could get much out of those transcriptions. There is nobody left I know who can play like him now, he could do awesome solo and then hold the perfect part in a group setting! How did he get that good? I'll never know.
At least you'll be able to get his recordings around now easily.

- Peterson was one of the greatest of the great and his music is going to stand as proof of that for a long time.

The Path of a Creative Thinker at CTI
1. Membership at CTI is free and open to all those interested in either the production or appreciation of the creative arts, to include literature, visual art, dance, music, film, spiritual theory, the social sciences, philosophy, general humanities, scientific inquiry, education in general, and other disciplines intended to enhance the quality of life for all humanity.
2. Materials posted by Members of CTI are their sole responsibility and not that of CTI management or any other member of the CTI site.
3. While recognizing that the work of creative artists is often controversial by its very nature, CTI prohibits and discourages the posting of any overtly obscene and intentionally inflammatory material. These include overt pornography, racist diatribes, religious slander, and any postings promoting discrimination against or the oppression of other human beings.
4. In the interest of stimulating creative growth, we encourage dialogue and even debate. However, Members should avoid leaving intentionally offensive or antagonistic remarks on the pages of Fellow Members. We can disagree and still remain a harmonious community.
5. Explore, grow, share, and enjoy your creative success.
Please remember, these guidelines are likely to evolve as the site itself continues to evolve and develop. We welcome and encourage your input. After all, yours are some of the best minds on the planet so we would be very foolish not to listen to what you have to say.
