Lullaby For Romeo

by Sara L Russell

How lovely is my dearest one in sleep,
A fair whisper of who he was before;
Silence has fallen in the castle keep,
Spring birds are singing; and he speaks no more.

How pale, my Romeo, by evening light,
How cold, these sullen lips I'm burning for;
The sunset burns with amber, warm and bright,
Blooms shine like lanterns; and he sees no more.

I kiss the pillowed tresses of his hair,
Caress his face, these pale hands I adore,
Such touches as would tell how much I care,
I kiss him softly; though he feels no more.

The dagger shimmers coldly in my hand
Bringing death's sweet release to my command.

Thanks Robby! Very nice comments, and it's always good to read your take on it :) ... You should definitely go for the Dante's inferno idea. Read the whole thing first, and see where it leads you :)

well, that was my own little take on it, that stanza. I'm not as familiar with the ending of Romeo & Juliet, so I wasn't too sure what the intent of the turn was in the poem, but I'm glad I know now. The first part had a such a lovely lilt to it...it made me sigh and smile. You really have a BEAUTIFUL touch to light sensuality when you want :) I find myself reading in a light and airy voice of late alot in my own mind when you write such pieces. I've pondered my on doing my own take on such inspirations. For the longest time, I've wanted to write Dante's Inferno in the frame of the realms of Heaven and Hell in the buddhist realms...and I want to do it in middle english! Rather ambitious huh?! :P

Simply a lovely poem :)

Aha no... I think at the end Juliet stabs herself when she thinks Romeo is dead. I know one of them is pretending to be dead, then the other one commits suicide. I think it's Juliet goes into a drug induced coma, Romeo thinks she's dead and drinks poison. She wakes to find him dead, and in despair, stabs herself. I'll have to read it again, but I know she utters the words "oh happy dagger!" ... must check up on that, to make sure I've got it right. She uses the knife on herself.... glad you like the sonnet :)

WOW!!! Such a radical turn in the end! You truly don't see it coming! May I ask what it inspired this? Was it a desire to mix eros and thanatos into one? Quite a powerful piece, especially since the two parts so powerfully evoke the intended moods.

AHHH...Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo...thou art fallen under the sting of unsheathed and glinting dagger!!
