Ode to a Firetree
I wondered as a three-year-old boy
Why were you called such?
Why were you planted on that spot?
Why were you blest with vibrant foliage?
Why were you given blossoming petals?
With such queries I paused
And lent you my sense of sight
And your stature seemingly spoke
I can’t help but listen as I behold…
To tell you what others left untold:
You bare those beautiful hues
As if to tease the grasses below
You spread your free fingertips
Like the radiant rays of Apollo
Arresting attention… alluring eyes.
You captivate awe-filled passersby
As you sway with the gentle leaves
You dance with many a tree
As if to flaunt your animated flowers
Cheering them up… spreading liveliness.
O, lucky enticing firetree!
You do instruct poets like me:
Beauty exists where He wills it—
That wherever a meek tree grows,
God’s unique greatness unfolds!
