I would say there is truth to all aspects of your ponderings at the end of this moving account. Your life seems rather like a poem, or perhaps a "song" might be the more appropriate word, ever unfolding with an accumulation of experience, meaning, knowledge so that you through your creative visions and passionate soul might address these issues in this world where truly they must be addressed in order to be corrected.

After posting my first reply I listened to mp3 linked above. Absolutely Fabulous!

When I was a child I decided what kind of person I would like to be. I decided I would be kind, even though I already knew some people equate kindness with stupidity. I decided to be honest, thinking, if I was honest it meant there must be other people out there who were honest. I decided to be my own person and not to follow the crowd. My particular hate was others joining a group to pick on someone. It meant I have always been an individual and not afraid to be one. I tell the grandchildren, 'don't be a sheep, be a butterfly.' And so, I think I am a person of my own making. Life did not bend and shape me.

The metaphor of the sheep and the butterfly is as good as any other, but I share your thoughts , and lambs: Think that Out of 10 "alleged" persons or human beings, as we'd love to regard ourselves, 5 will have always a sheep or lamb mentality, (as portrayed by Orwell in his Animal Farm. Love the book as i grow younger/older). This is not bad per se... but them, if we follow the metaphor, sheep can't be left to the faked mercy of preachers, demagogues, leaders, un less.....

Four legs good, two legs bad!

If human beings have souls, don't you think we should be doing a better job of managing this world?????

Prejudice of any kind is a terrible thing. As a child I was made to feel stupid because of a temporary deafness caused by "glue ear".... it took a while for a doctor to discover that I was lip reading at school and did not even realise that I was.

I think racism and religious hate goes back to ancient times when humans were split into many tribes, which had to fight one another to survive or to find food and land. It's like tribalism with a different name. In the world of primates, groups of monkeys gang up on other groups to brutally drive them away from areas with plenty of food, so that they can have the food. We humans are descended from these creatures, and it's sad that we have learned sophistication (especially in modern warfare gadgetry) without learning proper civilization, i.e., how to co-exist and build together without competing/warring all the time. In that regard, humanity has barely begun to come down from the trees.

I agree. (Western) Science is equated with knowledge, but a knowledge without ethics.

I have often piped up in defence of another person and instead of being set upon as I expected, the other person has backed down saying things like, 'I didn't really mean it.' and shown themselves up for what they really are, a coward.

It is a pity people take so much notice of biggots who obviously are not well balanced. One day these biggots will be dead and what they thought will be of no consequence to anyone.

Nature swims those little genetic spirals in the womb, nurture twist them willy nilly to reach for sun or moon or man or beast. Some don't have the strength to refall into those genetic inclinations of pure soul after nurture and society gets done with them and tosses them to the city lights and woofie stalk to shake what they have learned at mum's knees or poppy's gunshot side, they are a product of their environment. I have met the most expansive human beings as well as the most ignorant, and their behavior was taught, their reactions to situations, cultures, etc, ingrained by compassion or a belt. Some have shaken off ignorant rearing and fly amidst a thousan prismatic cultures in a beautiful dance, absorbing everything, taking nothing for granted, in love with the potential of the human species. =)

But rather than doing that, we invite you to explore for yourself his created wonders at http://creativethinkersintl.ning.com/profile/RobertM

It is truly our honor at CTI to present Poetry Life and Times as our Spotlight Artist for April 16-30, 2008. The image of the monk featured as their main page profile image is borrowed from their current issue. CTI Spotlight Artist Luther E. Vann April 1-15, 2008

(photo of Luther E. Vann by John Schmidt)

Often described as a poet who utilizes visual art to write his poems, Luther E. Vann is an acclaimed artist who was fortunate enough to receive some of his first art instructions from recognized masters of the Harlem Renaissance. Like all artists of note, he shaped what he learned into a style of his own that fuses deeply spiritual imagery, metaphysical philosophy, and strong social realism. After a lifetime of dedication to his craft, his work will go on exhibit at the Telfair Museum in Savannah, Georgia, from April 16-August 17, 2008, and his first book, ELEMENTAL, The Power of Illuminated Love, is scheduled for publication in May. We’re honored for the opportunity to present Vann as the CTI Spotlight Artist for April 1-15 and invite you to visit his profile to learn more about him at
